Children in the Clyde area over Watermelon Festival weekend had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of creative activities during the "Fun with Music" and "Fun with Art" events sponsored by the CCDRC and Community Foundation for Cloud County.

Thad Beach and his "Band in a Bucket" was the featured performer at the "Fun with Music" event scheduled on Saturday afternoon at the Clyde Grade School Community Room.  A crowd of over 50 children, parents and grandparents attended this family concert consisting of music played on homemade instruments, light-hearted and humorous songs, children moving and shaking, and a lot of audience participation.  A face painting station was set up where children could get their faces painted by volunteers Tonya Kidd or Allie Danielson.  There were also a variety of prizes donated by Tom's Music House which were given away during the "Fun with Music" event.  Emma Nobert and Jonas Danielson both received a $25 gift certificate to Tom's Music House; Olivia and Luke Nobert both won harmonicas; and Josh Mueller, Abby Petersen, Genevieve Lowery and Collin Biery each won a set of drumsticks.  Clay Girard won a "Pokadot Cafe" CD containing music and songs by Thad Beach.  Fresh apples were available for a treat for those in attendance who worked up an appetite from all the musical fun!

On Monday morning the Clyde City Park was the site for the "Fun with Art" event.  A variety of art projects led by local artists Bill Genereux, Sarah Chavey, Karlie Brown and Ashley Moore were featured during this morning of hands on artistic fun.  Several art students from the Clifton-Clyde High School also volunteered their time, assisting the children with the various art projects.

Children had the opportunity to be traced with sidewalk chalk and then continue to use the chalk to color in all their personal features.  There was a sponge painting station where children created works of art by throwing sponge balls dipped in paint at an easel containing their paper canvas.  A slightly calmer painting station consisted of using sponge brushes and die cut sponge shapes to design masterpieces on paper.  Children had the opportunity to create art projects with texture by gluing colorful beads or stones to their designs.  A table containing illustrated art books, paper, colored crayons and pencils offered children the opportunity to attempt to create replicas of famous works of art.  The hands-on fun continued with the making of  painted pasta necklaces.  The children had a wide selection of pasta shapes to choose from ranging from Mickey Mouse and flower shapes to penne tube-shaped pasta.  They could also choose from a wide variety of paint colors to create their one-of-a-kind and truly unique necklaces.

The 2009 "Fun with..." series of events were FREE to area children and featured hands-on exploration in the realms of Science, Music and Art.  This series of events offered children and their families an alternative outlet to experience hands-on learning, creativity and discovery.  Watch for future information on "Fun with..." events coming to the Clyde area in 2010.
